Choosing the right ribbon isn't just about color — the material, weave and width determine how it looks, feels and performs on your product. In this guide we break down the main ribbon types used in packaging, garment, pet and bag industries.
Satin ribbon has a smooth, glossy surface and a silky hand feel. It's the most popular choice for gift wrapping, floral arrangements and apparel decoration. Available in single-face (glossy on one side) and double-face (glossy both sides). Polyester satin is the standard — affordable, colorfast and wrinkle-resistant. Common widths: 3mm, 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 25mm.
Grosgrain has a fine ribbed texture (like a very fine corduroy). It's stiffer than satin, holds its shape well, and is widely used for hair bows, lanyards, belts and garment trim. It doesn't slip and prints cleanly — making it a top choice for custom logo ribbons.
Organza is a translucent, lightweight fabric with a crisp hand. It's used for wedding decoration, gift wrapping and bouquets. It comes in solid colors and two-tone (edge contrast) versions. Best for decorative, not structural, uses.
Polypropylene (PP) webbing is a flat, durable strap used for bags, backpacks, luggage and outdoor gear. It's water-resistant, lightweight and cheap. Common widths: 20mm, 25mm, 38mm, 50mm.
Elastic webbing (rubber + polyester/spandex) stretches and recovers. Used in waistbands, medical garments, socks, underwear and sporting gear. Widths range from 5mm to 50mm.
Jacquard ribbons have the logo woven directly into the fabric (not printed). They look premium, last longer than printed logos, and are common in high-end apparel, pet collars and luggage straps.
Ask yourself: (1) Is it decorative or structural? (2) What width do I need? (3) Will it touch skin or food? (4) What's my MOQ budget? When in doubt, order a free sample first.
