Fabric Ribbon, Tape & Webbing: A Terminology Guide

If you are new to buying trims for packaging, garments or crafts, the words ribbon, tape and webbing are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not. Sending a supplier the wrong term can get you the wrong product — a thin satin ribbon where you needed a stiff twill tape, or a soft woven tape where you needed a load-bearing webbing strap. This guide explains the difference in plain language.

What Is Fabric Ribbon?

Ribbon is a narrow strip of woven or knitted fabric, usually decorative, with two finished selvedge edges. Satin ribbon, grosgrain ribbon and organza ribbon are all fabric ribbon. Ribbon is chosen for how it looks and feels: glossy satin for gifts, ribbed grosgrain for sturdy bows, sheer organza for wedding favors. Most ribbon is light- to medium-weight and not built to carry heavy loads.

What Is Tape?

Tape is a narrow woven or non-woven strip used mainly for functional purposes. Twill tape, bias tape, hem tape and binding tape hold seams, bind edges and reinforce garments. Tapes tend to be stiffer and flatter than decorative ribbon. Many tapes, like twill tape, look plain because their job is structure, not decoration. When you need piping, drawcord or binding, you are buying tape — not ribbon.

What Is Webbing?

Webbing is a strong, densely woven fabric strap — often nylon, polyester or cotton — made to take tension. Seat belt webbing, bag webbing, dog collar webbing and elastic webbing are all load-bearing straps. Webbing is wider, thicker and stronger than ribbon or tape, and its edges are finished so it will not fray under stress.

Ribbon vs Tape vs Webbing at a Glance

Term Purpose Typical uses
Fabric ribbon Decoration Gift wrapping, bows, hair accessories, trims
Tape Structure & binding Hem tape, twill tape, bias binding, piping, drawcord
Webbing Strength & tension Straps, belts, collars, luggage, safety equipment

Why It Matters When You Buy Wholesale

When you request a quote, use the exact term for what you need. Ask for satin ribbon when you want a glossy bow, twill tape when you want a flat structural tape, and webbing strap when the strip must carry weight. Naming the product correctly also helps you compare prices: ribbon, tape and webbing are priced differently because they are woven differently.

Tip for buyers: mention the width in millimetres and the end use in your enquiry. "25mm double face satin ribbon for gift boxes" gets you a much more accurate quote than "ribbon".
